other side of the fence

I have been here for about 8 days. It's been definitely an interesting experience so far to say the least. I'm definitely feeling the hatred of americans thing. And it's definitely starting to piss me off. I don't know if it's just because it's tourist season & tourist season is winding down and so they're tired of it, or they are just rude, but I feel like I can't walk out of my house without getting dirty looks or being talked about. My friend Karissa suggested though that as a white woman from a privileged white city that it's probably a good experience to be discriminated against just for who I am, and that we'll be better for it. Or something. I'm trying to just take my experiences as they come in the least judgemental of ways and then analyze them later. I need to adopt (something I've been trying to do for a while) a mind set of not taking anything personally. I think I have a lot to learn from my roommates and the girls here, too. They are all intelligent in their own ways and I love that. Classes start tomorrow and I'm so ready to get back into it and start learning and have something to do during the days.
I'm about to flickr some pictures. check em out!

  1. i totally thought you'd blend in as italian! when you are on your own to you get the same reaction as when you are in groups? (just curious)

i think what karissa said is really insightful. it is a bizarre experience to be on "the other side of the fence."

    miss you!
